Explicit Consent
Pornhub x TrueMedia.org
We have all had a small taste of artificial intelligence at some point in our life – whether it was using ChatGPT to help draft an email or using Canva's AI image generator. It's no question that AI has been a huge technological advancement that has significantly impacted our lives. For better and for worse.
But what happens when the use of AI is taken too far? What happens when it's used to create deepfakes meant to manipulate and deceive? We cannot be complacent.
At a glance:
The Problem: the use of AI to generate deepfakes is largely nonconsensual & an exploitation of the technology.
The Insight: People turn a blind eye to the dangers of the world because they never think it'll happen to them until it does.
Our Objective: increase awareness and enact action surrounding this issue
Our Strategy: Pornhub's collaboration with TrueMedia.org adds the shock value to convey a compelling message to counteract the growing issue of non-consensual use of deepfakes in explicit content.
An Overview of Deepfakes
So, what are deepfakes?
Deepfakes use a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning. They are generated by machine-learning algorithms combined with facial-mapping software, and are used to make fake events. In general, they are meant to be deceptive.
This technology has done a lot of good...
Including helping children on the autism spectrum understand emotions. Stanford University's Autism Glass Project has been using facial recognition software that runs on Google Glass to help users read facial expressions and cue them to what emotion they are seeing.
...but it has also done a lot of bad.
There is currently some legislation being put in place to combat and protect victims.
-
10 states currently have criminal laws against manipulated media files
-
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is leading the DEFIANCE Act of 2024, which would be the first federal law to protect victims of deepfake
But, this is not enough...
YOU could be a victim too.
Pornhub stands as the 10th most visited website in the world, with over 22 million videos posted everyday. With the increasing accessibility to deepfake technology to common people, it is becoming harder and harder to safeguard ourselves and our patrons from nonconsensual content that can ruin lives of many people, especially women.
Our collaboration with TrueMedia.org (a non-profit, non-partisan AI project to fight disinformation in political campaigns by identifying manipulated media) places us in a unique position:
Pornhub is one of the biggest mediums for this deepfake problem, and it can also provide one of the biggest solutions with the help of TrueMedia.org's technology and resources.
Insight:
People turn a blind eye to the dangers of the world because they never think it'll happen to them until it does.
Strategy:
Pornhub's collaboration with TrueMedia.org adds the shock value to convey a compelling message to counteract the growing issue of non-consensual use of deepfakes in explicit content.
How will we do it? We present...
How does it work?
This would be a multi-view pixel technology within PARALLEL REALITY. Audiences “consensually” have their faces scanned at the theater gate as they scan their movie passes to enter.
And who are we targeting?
Ideally, this is a widespread issue that everyone should be aware of and actively fighting against. Through research, we did find that Pornhub's largest demographic would be adults between 18-34 years old. Additionally:
-
Digital Natives – very active on social media (for entertainment & information)
-
Have heard of AI and may have used the technology to some extent (ChatGPT, GoogleBard, etc)
-
Those who are aware of, but indifferent towards, the dangers of explicit deepfake content
